Sydney First-timers: Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk

If you knew me in 2019, you’d know I was all about jam-packing each day to the absolute BRIM with new places to see and activities to do. But backpacking this time around has taught me to slow down and appreciate my surroundings.

For all you first-timers in Sydney, I could not recommend the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk more! Especially on your first day as you’re recovering from jetlag, the coastal walk is perfect for getting you some fresh air, a beautiful start to your Australia camera roll, and perhaps a refreshing dip to wake you up 😉

The walk stretches 6 kilometers along the coast from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach with several notable stops. We took our time since we had nothing else planned for the day and ended up spending around 4 hours completing the walk. However, on average (with minimal stopping) the walk takes approximately 2 hours.

The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is generally easy for the average person with occasional stairs and water refill stations. If you plan on strictly walking, I recommend wearing shoes, HOWEVER, if you plan on swimming, slippers or sandals are better (because nothing is worse than wet socks).

ALSO – the walk is SO dog-friendly! As you go, you’ll notice dog bowls beside the refillable water stations (not always clean), so don’t be surprised if you come across some friendly faces along the way. However, if you’re not a dog person, definitely keep this in mind because there’s no avoiding running into them.

You can start at either Coogee or Bondi Beach. We began at Coogee Beach because it was closer, but from what I’ve gathered, neither direction is better than the other.

The easiest way to get there from Sydney Central is by bus (~30 minutes). Buses are just outside Central Station on Eddy Ave. and run about every 20 minutes. Many are direct buses to Arden St., but a few have transfers (definitely take a direct if you can!)

Public transportation in Sydney is INCREDIBLY EASY if you’ve got Apple Pay! For buses and trams, you just tap on and off with your phone (or Opal Card). Price is calculated by distance, so it’s important to remember to tap off! I believe our bus from Sydney Central to Coogee Beach was roughly $5-$6 AUD one way.

PACK WITH YOU (w/ optional swimming)

Pack as you would any other walk, but try to keep your bag lightweight! But be sure to have the following:

  • Sunscreen
  • Microfiber towel (for swimming or lounging on the grass/beach)
  • Swimsuit (if you don’t want to walk in it)
  • Sunglasses
  • Kindle or Airpods (for entertainment purposes)
  • Water to last a few hours

Be sure to save this list for your coastal walk and be on the lookout for other pretty views along the way!

  • Giles Bath
  • Bali Memorial
  • Gordons Bay
  • Clovelly Beach
  • Bronte Baths (free to swim)
  • Tamarama Beach
  • Bondi Icebergs ($8 AUD for adults)
  • Bondi Beach

I said it before and I’ll say it again – I HIGHLY recommend doing this on your first day! If you’re looking to get some steps in, enjoy viewpoints, and overall just have a more chill day one, this is the best intro to Sydney!

Let me know how it goes! Enjoy Aus!
